A technology job became an ownership position at Pactual

Esteves joined Pactual in 1989 in the bank's technology department and became a partner in 1993 before moving into senior fixed-income leadership. That progression tied his wealth increasingly to partnership economics rather than to salary alone. ^[1]

Pactual was sold to UBS in 2006, after which Esteves became chief executive and chairman of UBS Pactual and later held a global markets leadership role at UBS. The transaction crystallized value for the Pactual partners and gave Esteves both capital and institutional experience for his next venture. ^[1]

Esteves left UBS in 2008 and founded BTG Investments. The following year, the group acquired Pactual back from UBS and combined the businesses under the BTG Pactual name, restoring founder-like ownership economics around an investment bank he already knew deeply. ^[1][2]

BTG Pactual later expanded across investment banking, asset management, wealth management and related financial businesses. Esteves remained chairman, senior partner and controlling shareholder, so the bank's public-market value and distributions became directly relevant to his personal fortune. ^[1][2]

The capital and client assets handled by BTG Pactual are distinct from Esteves's own wealth. His billionaire status is better explained by the value of his controlling ownership, partnership economics and investment gains accumulated through the institution he helped rebuild. ^[1][2]
