Company Overview - ASE Group

History
Founded in 1984 by Jason and Richard Chang, ASE Group is headquartered in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
As of April 1, 2016, the company's market cap was US$8.77 billion.
ASE Group is the largest Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) provider, with over 90% of electronics companies worldwide utilizing their services.
In May 2015, ASE Group established a joint venture named ASE Embedded Electronics Inc. with TDK, focusing on IC embedded substrates utilizing TDK's SESUB technology.
ASE Group and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) announced a consolidation agreement in May 2016 to form a new holding company.

Technological Innovations
ASE specializes in semiconductor assembly, packaging, and testing services, offering a wide range of packaging technologies such as fan-out wafer-level packaging (FO-WLP), wafer-level chip-scale packaging (WL-CSP), flip chip, 2.5D and 3D packaging, and system in package (SiP).
The company has been at the forefront of fan-out wafer-level packaging (FO-WLP), a technology enabling ultra-thin, high-density packages, which is a growing trend in the industry.
ASE initiated volume production of wafer-level chip-scale packages (WL-CSP) in October 2001, catering to the demand for smaller and faster portable consumer devices.
Flip chip technology, employed by ASE, is expected to see significant growth driven by mobile, wireless devices, computing applications, and smart TVs.
ASE has been collaborating with AMD since 2007 to bring 2.5D packaging technology to market, notably producing Fiji, a 2.5D-based GPU processor designed for extreme gamers.

Environmental Initiatives
ASE faced public scrutiny in December 2013 for water pollution caused by untreated wastewater from a plant in southern Taiwan, resulting in a fine and public apology from Jason Chang.
From 2010 to 2013, ASE invested US$13.2 million in treating industrial water and $25.3 million to build a water recycling plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The water recycling plant, operational since January 2015, handles up to 20,000 metric tons of wastewater per day, recycling half for internal use and discharging the rest into city drains, meeting local regulations.

Facilities and Operations
ASE's main operations are in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with additional plants in China, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The company also has offices and service centers in several countries including China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Belgium, and the United States.
In October 2013, an incident occurred at ASE's K7 facility in Kaohsiung, leading to a temporary suspension of operations. However, by December 2014, operations resumed after improvements were made in wastewater treatment.
ASE continues to invest in expanding its production capacity, with plans to double its SiP production capacity within three years as of April 2015.

Jason Chang is very wealthy, but what's stopping you from reaching that same level of success? As summarized in our five fundamental rules to wealth building, becoming wealthy in a modern capitalist economy is not complicated. There's actually only three variables:

  1. Your starting capital
  2. Your earnings after expenses
  3. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of your savings

Most people start with zero or very little, so if you weren't born into wealth, don't fret! The majority of the fortunate folks listed in our Grizzly Bulls’ Billionaires Index came from middle class or lower backgrounds. The most distinguishing characteristic of the group is their ability to consistently earn a high CAGR on their savings.

Every billionaire has a unique strategy to achieve high CAGR. For Jason Chang, Electronics is the primary source. Whether you choose to invest your savings in your own businesses or the businesses of others is not as important. The salient piece of the puzzle is ensuring that your hard-earned savings are generating sufficient CAGR to reach your long term goals.

Most people simply invest their money in index funds and call it a day. There's nothing wrong with this approach, but it guarantees relative mediocrity. To achieve greatness, you need to invest your money to earn higher than average returns. In the long run, better investors will always finish ahead of better earners.
