Samir Mehta started from a substantial second-generation position in the Torrent Group founded by his father, then helped expand the family platform across pharmaceuticals, power, gas and acquisitions. [1][2][3]
Torrent was already a family business when he entered leadership
Torrent says Samir Mehta's father, U. N. Mehta, founded the group in 1959 after working as a medical representative, establishing the family-controlled pharmaceutical business that became Samir's starting economic platform. [1]
The group identifies Sudhir and Samir Mehta as the second-generation leaders of the enterprise. Samir therefore entered a substantial operating company rather than building the original pharmaceutical business from scratch. [1]
Torrent Pharmaceuticals says Samir became chairman of the wider Torrent Group and has led strategy at the pharmaceutical company, including expansion into new therapies and geographies, product-development investment, manufacturing capacity and acquisitions. [2]
His tenure broadened the inherited platform
Torrent also credits Mehta with an instrumental role in the group's entry and growth in power, where Torrent Power developed generation, transmission and distribution operations alongside the family's pharmaceutical base. [2]
The expansion has continued through large transactions. In 2025, Forbes reported that Torrent Pharmaceuticals agreed to acquire control of JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals in a deal valuing the target at about $3 billion, with Mehta describing the combination as a way to deepen Torrent's Indian and global pharmaceutical presence.
