How Jensen Huang Nearly Lost NVIDIA—Then Built a $187 Billion NVIDIA Stake

Jensen Huang's fortune makes more sense as a three-decade story of survival, platform building, and retained founder ownership than as a sudden AI windfall.

Grizzly Bulls calculates that Jensen Huang had at least $187 billion of identified public-market wealth tied to NVIDIA as of September 4, 2026. That figure comes from a reviewed public ownership relationship totaling more than 812 million NVIDIA shares and a specific market-price snapshot. The more interesting question is how a founder can still have that much economic exposure more than three decades after starting a company. The story begins before NVIDIA

Huang's first job at Denny's in Portland began when he was 15. Years later, in 1993, Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem met at a Denny's in Silicon Valley to talk through the company idea that became NVIDIA. NVIDIA nearly died before it became NVIDIA

NVIDIA's NV1 was a commercial failure, and the company had also committed to build NV2 for Sega. RIVA 128 bought the company time

That last chance became RIVA 128. According to Huang's account, the chip worked on its first tapeout and sold 1 million units in its first four months. After several wrong turns, NVIDIA had a product that kept the company alive. (research source)

NVIDIA then went public on January 22, 1999 at $12 a share. The point is not to pretend every founder share held from the IPO would have followed a simple untouched compounding path. CUDA turned graphics hardware into a broader platform

NVIDIA introduced CUDA in 2006, opening its graphics processors to general-purpose parallel computing. That made the GPU useful for workloads that had little to do with drawing pixels, including scientific and technical computation. (research source, research source)

By 2012, NVIDIA GPUs powered AlexNet, the neural-network breakthrough that helped push deep learning into the mainstream. In hindsight the line from CUDA to modern AI looks obvious. Huang's June 17, 2026 Form 4 reported 70,146,252 NVIDIA shares held directly and 741,858,494 held indirectly, for 812,004,746 shares across the reported ownership relationship. (research source)

The direct-versus-indirect distinction is important. The indirect portion includes the Huang living trust, two irrevocable trusts, and six trust-owned LLCs. It would therefore be wrong to describe all 812 million shares as stock sitting directly in Huang's personal brokerage account. (research source)

A huge stock fortune is not the same thing as cash

The same concentration that created extraordinary upside also creates extraordinary exposure to NVIDIA's share price. When the stock rises, the market value of the identified stake can rise quickly.
