Translate a per-trade risk limit and stop distance into a whole-contract position for ES, MES, NQ, or MNQ. The calculator shows when the contract itself is too large for the risk budget instead of silently rounding up.

A 20-point MES stop equals 80 ticks. One tick is $1.25. $0.00 of the entered risk budget remains unused after whole-contract sizing.

The calculation starts with loss budget, not margin

Margin tells you how much collateral a broker or clearing system requires. It does not tell you how much you intend to lose if a trade reaches its stop. Position sizing begins with a separate loss budget.

Risk budget = account equity × risk limit %
Risk per contract = stop distance in points × contract multiplier
Maximum whole contracts = floor(risk budget ÷ risk per contract)
Minimum account for one contract = risk per contract ÷ risk-limit fraction

For example, a 20-point stop on MES represents $100 of price risk because MES moves $5 per index point. At a 1% risk limit, one MES contract therefore requires at least $10,000 of account equity before slippage, fees, gaps, or execution error.

Why Micro contracts change the sizing problem

ES and MES track the same S&P 500 index exposure at different scales. NQ and MNQ do the same for the Nasdaq-100. The smaller multiplier can make it possible to stay below a fixed loss budget without changing the stop merely to make a larger contract fit.

A stop is not a guaranteed loss cap

This calculator converts an intended stop distance into linear price risk. Real losses can be larger. Stop orders can slip, markets can gap, liquidity can deteriorate, and commissions and exchange fees add friction. Futures also create leverage and margin-call risk that this position-size calculation does not model.
