Audio Streaming Premium Subscribers measure the paid-account base under the issuer's subscription definition.

Spotify reported 290 million Premium Subscribers at December 31, 2025, up from 263 million a year earlier.

A subscriber is not necessarily one paying household

Spotify counts registered accounts with an activated payment method. Family Plan sub-accounts and Duo Plan sub-accounts can each count as Premium Subscribers.

Subscribers can also remain included during a grace period of up to 30 days after a failed payment.

The KPI therefore measures qualifying paid accounts, not billing relationships or unique households.

Plan mix affects the economics behind the count

Family, Duo, and Student plans generally carry lower revenue per Premium Subscriber than an Individual plan.

A rising subscriber count can still coexist with pressure on Premium ARPU if growth is concentrated in lower-priced plans, markets, or currencies.

Conversion is only one part of subscriber growth

Spotify says new Premium Subscribers are primarily sourced from conversion of Ad-Supported users, while trials and global campaigns also contribute gross additions.

Retention matters too. Multi-device engagement and plan design can affect churn and lifetime value, so ending subscriber growth should not be interpreted as gross conversion volume.

Where this concept fits
  • Audience scale and paid conversionCurrent relationship
Monthly Active Users show the total engaged audience, while Premium Subscribers and Ad-Supported MAUs split that audience into paid and free-service participation under Spotify's issuer-defined methodology. Their growth rates show whether audience expansion is occurring through paid subscriptions, ad-supported usage, or both.
  • Premium and ad-supported monetization
Premium ARPU connects paid-user scale to subscription monetization, while Premium and Ad-Supported revenue and their growth rates show how the two services translate audience into revenue. Foreign exchange, pricing, plan mix, advertising CPMs, impressions sold, and sales-channel mix can cause revenue growth to diverge from user growth.
  • Content-cost and gross-margin economics
Premium and Ad-Supported gross margins show the economics of each service after royalties, content, podcast, audiobook, payment-processing, streaming-delivery, and related costs, while consolidated gross margin combines both services. Segment margin changes can differ materially because the underlying revenue and cost drivers are different.
