Bank average deposits measure the average deposit balance maintained over a reporting period.

They provide a period-matched view of deposit funding that can differ meaningfully from the balance reported at quarter end.

Why average deposits matter

Banks fund loans and securities throughout the period, not only on the final reporting date. Average deposits help investors evaluate funding growth, deposit retention, pricing pressure, mix, and spread economics.

A bank can attract large balances shortly before quarter end or experience late-period runoff, so ending deposits can overstate or understate the funding base that supported earnings.

Filing examples

PNC reports average interest-bearing deposits within its average-balance table. Fifth Third discusses changes in average deposits, including demand deposits and interest checking.
