Car Rental Revenue per Unit per Month: Fleet Productivity Explained

Car rental revenue per unit per month measures monthly revenue productivity per rentable vehicle, combining pricing, utilization, and fleet sizing into one operating metric.

By Lee BaileyPublished Sep 18, 2026

Car rental revenue per unit per month measures the average monthly revenue generated per rentable vehicle under the issuer's reporting definition.

Hertz calls the metric Total Revenue Per Unit Per Month, or Total RPU.

RPU combines pricing and utilization

A simplified relationship is:

revenue per unit per month ≈ revenue per rental day × rental days per vehicle per month

That means RPU can improve because daily pricing rises, because utilization improves, or because both happen together.

Hertz reported Total RPU per month of $1,353 in the first quarter of 2026, up 5% year over year.

In the second quarter, Hertz said year-over-year RPU increased 8%.

RPU is broader than revenue per day

Revenue per day measures what the company earns when a vehicle is rented.

RPU measures how much revenue the average vehicle generates across the month, including idle time.

That makes RPU especially useful when a company changes fleet size.

If revenue per day is flat but utilization rises, RPU can still improve.

RPU can reveal fleet discipline

Suppose a company reduces its fleet by 5% while transaction days decline only 1%.

Utilization can rise, allowing more revenue to be generated from each remaining vehicle.

That can improve RPU even if total revenue is flat.

The reverse can happen when fleet growth outruns demand.

RPU is not profit per vehicle

Higher revenue productivity does not guarantee higher unit profit.

Vehicle depreciation, lease expense, interest, maintenance, damage, remarketing losses, and operating costs all affect economics.

That is why RPU should be paired with Car Rental Fleet Cost per Unit per Month.

Primary-source examples

Car rental revenue per unit per month is most useful as a fleet-productivity measure combining pricing, utilization, and capacity.

Part of the Car Rental Operating Model

Connect fleet size, transaction days, utilization, daily pricing, revenue per unit, and fleet cost to understand rental-car economics.

How the model fits together
  • Fleet capacity and utilization: Vehicle utilization relates transaction days to available fleet days. Average fleet size and transaction days therefore describe supplied vehicle capacity and consumed rental days together.
  • Rental yield and fleet cost: Revenue per day monetizes rented days, while revenue per unit per month combines pricing and utilization at the fleet-unit level. Fleet cost per unit per month provides a key ownership-cost counterweight.
