Foundry Capacity Utilization: Semiconductor Fab Utilization Explained

Foundry capacity utilization compares semiconductor wafer volume with available fab capacity, helping investors judge fixed-cost absorption and demand conditions.

Foundry capacity utilization measures how much of a semiconductor manufacturer's available wafer capacity is being used.

A simplified form is:

capacity utilization = wafer volume ÷ available wafer capacity × 100%

The exact numerator can differ by company. GlobalFoundries uses a related shipment utilization measure based on wafer shipment volume divided by estimated manufacturing capacity.

Why utilization matters

Semiconductor fabs have substantial fixed costs whether they are running near full capacity or not.

Those costs can include:

  • depreciation;
  • staffing;
  • electricity;
  • maintenance;
  • clean-room infrastructure; and
  • other facility expenses.

When utilization rises, those costs are generally spread across more wafers. When utilization falls, fixed-cost absorption can weaken.

GlobalFoundries calls shipment utilization an important driver of financial performance for this reason.

A simple example

Suppose a foundry has capacity for 1 million equivalent wafers during a quarter and ships 850,000.

A shipment-based utilization calculation would be:

850,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 85%

That does not mean every tool or fab ran at exactly 85%. It is an aggregate indicator.

Utilization is not a pure demand measure

Utilization can move because the denominator changes.

A foundry can report stronger shipments but lower utilization if it adds capacity even faster. It can also report improving utilization without strong shipment growth if capacity is taken offline.

Process complexity and product mix matter too. GlobalFoundries notes that wafer complexity and mix can affect its utilization rate.

Foundry utilization is a different industry-specific operating measure tied to semiconductor wafer manufacturing.
