Hospital patient days measure the number of inpatient days of care delivered during a reporting period.

They are a time-volume measure, not a count of unique patients.

Admissions and length of stay drive patient days

A patient admitted for one day contributes roughly one patient day. A patient staying five days contributes roughly five.

The bridge is approximate because issuer definitions, transfers, partial days, same-facility scope, and service-line treatment can differ.

Patient days can move differently from admissions

If admissions rise but average length of stay falls, patient days can remain flat or even decline.

That is why hospital operators often discuss all three measures together.

UHS reported acute-care admissions growth in 2025 while patient days were roughly flat on a same-facility basis, illustrating how patient throughput and inpatient time can diverge.

Adjusted patient days are different

Some hospital companies also report adjusted patient days to incorporate outpatient activity into an inpatient-equivalent measure.

Raw patient days should not be substituted for adjusted patient days or Hospital Adjusted Admissions, because the latter metrics intentionally broaden the activity base beyond inpatient stays.

Outpatient revenue mix shows how much patient revenue is generated without an inpatient admission, and uninsured admission mix adds a payer and collection-risk lens.
