LTL operating ratio compares a less-than-truckload carrier's operating expenses with its operating revenue.

The standard form is:

operating ratio = operating expenses ÷ operating revenue × 100%

A lower ratio generally means that less operating expense was required to generate each dollar of revenue, assuming comparable definitions.

How to read the ratio

Old Dominion Freight Line reported a second-quarter 2026 operating ratio of 70.1%.

At a simplified level, a 70.1% operating ratio means about $70.10 of operating expense for every $100 of operating revenue.

When the numerator and denominator align with operating income, the corresponding operating margin is approximately:

100% - 70.1% = 29.9%

This makes operating ratio intuitive, but the underlying cost drivers still matter.

Freight density can influence the ratio

LTL networks have significant fixed and semi-fixed costs:

  • service centers;
  • tractors and trailers;
  • linehaul operations;
  • drivers and dock labor;
  • technology;
  • depreciation; and
  • insurance and claims infrastructure.

Higher shipment density can spread some of those costs across more freight. Weak volume can create the opposite pressure.

Pricing and mix matter too, so operating ratio should be read beside shipments per day, tonnage, revenue per hundredweight, and revenue per shipment.

Lower is not automatically better in every period

A carrier can temporarily worsen its operating ratio while opening service centers, adding capacity, hiring ahead of demand, or absorbing unusual claims and weather costs.

Conversely, aggressive cost reductions can improve the ratio while damaging service or future network capacity.

The investor task is to separate durable network efficiency from temporary cost timing and underinvestment.

Do not compare freight modes blindly

The Railroad Operating Ratio uses the same expense-to-revenue arithmetic, but railroads and LTL carriers have different assets, labor models, network structures, fuel exposure, and service economics.

Even among LTL carriers, reported and adjusted ratios may differ. Preserve the exact expense scope and any exclusions before comparing companies.
