Natural Gas Processing Volume: Measuring Midstream Plant Inlet Flows

Natural gas processing volume measures raw gas handled by processing plants, separating plant inlet activity from gathering volume, residue-gas output, and NGL production.

Natural gas processing volume measures the quantity of raw natural gas handled by a midstream processing plant or group of plants during a period.

Processing volume is not gathering volume

Natural Gas Gathering Volume measures gas collected from wells or central delivery points. Processing volume measures gas that reaches and is handled by a processing plant.

The two can diverge because gathered gas may:

  • bypass processing;
  • require treating but not NGL extraction;
  • move to another operator's plant;
  • be consumed as fuel;
  • experience line loss; or
  • enter or leave the system through interconnections.

Targa explicitly monitors gas at both gathering-system receipt points and processing-plant inlets, illustrating that they are different operating measurements.

Processing volume is not NGL production

A processing plant separates raw gas into residue natural gas and natural gas liquids. The gas inlet volume is therefore a different metric from the amount of NGL recovered.

A simplified physical relationship is:

The amount of NGL recovered depends on gas composition, recovery mode, plant design, commodity economics, and operating choices such as ethane recovery versus ethane rejection.

Two plants processing the same gas volume can therefore produce different NGL volumes.

Processing capacity is not processing volume

Nameplate processing capacity indicates how much gas a plant is designed to handle under stated conditions. Actual processing volume reflects what the plant handled.

A plant with 500 MMcf/d of capacity processing 400 MMcf/d has simple utilization of 80% only if the numerator and denominator use compatible definitions.

Maintenance, inlet pressure, gas composition, plant configuration, expansions, outages, and shared facilities can change usable capacity.

Contract structure changes the economics

Processing arrangements can be fee-based or expose the midstream operator to commodity prices.

Common structures include:

  • fixed-fee processing;
  • percent-of-proceeds;
  • percent-of-liquids;
  • keep-whole arrangements; and
  • hybrid contracts.

Under a fee-based contract, economics may broadly resemble:

Under percent-of-proceeds or similar structures, the operator's economics can also depend on residue-gas and NGL prices, recovery, and the percentage retained.

MPLX's 2025 filing, for example, distinguishes fee-based arrangements from percent-of-proceeds arrangements and describes how product-related service revenue can depend on the contractual structure.

Recovery mode can change downstream NGL volumes

When ethane prices are unattractive relative to natural gas, processors may reject ethane into the residue gas stream rather than recover it as a liquid.

That can leave processing inlet volumes relatively stable while reducing NGL production or changing the composition delivered to fractionators.

This is one reason NGL Fractionation Volume should not be inferred mechanically from processing volume.

A simple example

Suppose a plant processes 450 MMcf/d of raw gas. During one period it recovers 45,000 barrels per day of mixed NGLs; in another, the same inlet volume produces 38,000 barrels per day because gas composition and ethane-recovery economics change.

Processing volume stayed flat. NGL output did not.

Filing examples

Targa's 2025 Form 10-K describes natural-gas processing as a core Gathering and Processing activity and links volumes to producer activity. MPLX reports natural-gas and NGL services including gathering, treating, processing, and transportation. ONEOK similarly reports processing and downstream NGL activity across its integrated midstream systems.
