Refining margin per barrel measures an issuer-defined refining margin relative to refinery throughput.
A common structure is:

Per-barrel margin separates volume from unit economics
Suppose a refinery processes 50 million barrels and generates $750 million of refining margin:
1$750M ÷ 50M barrels = $15 per barrelIf throughput rises to 60 million barrels while margin per barrel falls to $12, total margin would be $720 million.
That simple example shows why both dimensions matter:

The numerator must be read, not assumed
Marathon Petroleum defines its Refining & Marketing margin using sales revenue less the cost of refinery inputs and purchased products, divided by net refinery throughput for the per-barrel presentation.
Par Pacific reports adjusted gross margin per throughput barrel. CVR Energy reports refining margin and adjusted refining margin per total throughput barrel.
Those measures occupy a similar analytical role, but they can differ in treatment of:
- purchased products;
- renewable-fuel obligations;
- inventory valuation;
- derivatives;
- logistics or distribution costs;
- operating expenses; and
- special items.
A cross-company comparison without those reconciliations can be misleading.
Margin per barrel is not crack spread
Crack Spread is a market benchmark built from commodity prices.
Refining margin per barrel is an issuer-specific realized economic measure.
The difference between them can reflect crude differentials, feedstock costs, product slate, logistics, hedging, compliance costs, and operational execution.
This gap is often where the useful company analysis begins.
Margin per barrel is also not refinery operating profit per barrel
Operating costs, turnaround costs, depreciation, distribution costs, and other expenses may sit below the reported margin measure.
Marathon Petroleum's operating-statistics bridge is particularly useful because it separately reports Refining & Marketing margin per barrel, refining operating costs per barrel, distribution costs per barrel, planned turnaround costs per barrel, and depreciation and amortization per barrel.
A high refining margin can therefore coexist with weak final profitability if the cost stack is unusually high.
Current filing examples
Marathon Petroleum reported second-quarter 2026 Refining & Marketing margin of $36.33 per barrel, up from $17.58 a year earlier. Par Pacific reported second-quarter adjusted gross margin of $41.22 per throughput barrel for its total refining segment. CVR Energy reported adjusted refining margin of $12.43 per total throughput barrel for the same quarter.
Those values should not be ranked mechanically because the companies use different numerator definitions and operate different refinery systems.

Refining margin per barrel is a realized unit-economics measure. It is not standardized enough to compare without the issuer's reconciliation, and it is not the same as crack spread or final operating profit.
