Car rental vehicle disposal proceeds measure cash received when vehicles are sold or otherwise disposed of from a rental fleet.

They are a fleet-capital recycling measure, not rental revenue.

Vehicle sales fund the next fleet cycle

Rental vehicles are productive assets, but they are also inventory-like assets that operators regularly monetize.

Hertz reported $8.086 billion of proceeds from revenue-earning vehicle disposals in 2025. Those proceeds offset a large portion of the cash spent acquiring replacement and growth vehicles.

Avis Budget likewise identifies cash received on vehicle sales as a primary source of funding for its vehicle programs.

Proceeds depend on both volume and residual value

Disposal proceeds can rise because more vehicles are sold, because sale prices improve, or both.

A higher proceeds total therefore does not automatically mean residual values strengthened.

To evaluate resale economics, investors also need information about units sold, original cost, accumulated depreciation, holding period, vehicle mix, and gains or losses recognized on sale.

Disposition channels can change economics

Hertz sells non-program vehicles through retail, dealer-direct wholesale, and auction channels. The company has said it prioritizes retail where it can earn higher margins.

Channel mix can therefore affect realized proceeds and selling costs even when the underlying vehicles are similar.

Primary-source examples

Car rental vehicle disposal proceeds are most useful as a fleet-recycling cash-flow measure. Read them with vehicle expenditures, sale gains or losses, residual-value assumptions, and fleet size.

Part of the Car Rental Operating Model

Connect fleet size, transaction days, utilization, daily pricing, revenue per unit, fleet cost, fleet investment, disposal proceeds, vehicle carrying value, vehicle-backed debt, and distribution footprint to understand rental-car economics.

How the model fits together
  • Fleet capacity and utilization: Vehicle utilization relates transaction days to available fleet days. Average fleet size and transaction days therefore describe supplied vehicle capacity and consumed rental days together.
  • Rental yield and fleet cost: Revenue per day monetizes rented days, while revenue per unit per month combines pricing and utilization at the fleet-unit level. Fleet cost per unit per month provides a key ownership-cost counterweight.
  • Fleet investment, financing, and distribution footprint: Revenue-earning vehicle expenditures add fleet assets while vehicle disposal proceeds recycle capital from vehicles leaving the fleet. Net fleet capital expenditures show the residual investment after those proceeds, fleet carrying value shows the balance-sheet asset base, vehicle debt shows financing tied to the fleet, and location count shows the network through which that fleet is deployed. These issuer-defined measures add capital and network context rather than forming a standardized cross-company formula.
