Data center cabinet utilization measures the percentage of cabinet space billed to customers relative to total cabinet capacity under the operator's methodology.

Equinix uses the metric to evaluate how efficiently it is managing installed cabinet capacity across its IBX data centers.

Cabinet utilization is a physical-capacity measure

Equinix defines cabinet utilization as:

billed cabinet space ÷ total cabinet capacity

The company reported cabinet utilization of approximately 78% at June 30, 2026.

The ratio helps investors separate physical expansion from monetization. A company can add substantial new cabinet capacity while reported utilization falls if the new supply opens faster than customer deployments.

Utilization varies by market

A global average can hide tight and loose local markets.

Equinix notes that cabinet utilization varies across data centers and regions, while growth in some markets increasingly depends on timely delivery of new capacity and supporting power infrastructure.

A mature constrained market can therefore have high utilization while a recently expanded market carries significant vacant capacity.

Power density changes what a cabinet means

A cabinet is not a standardized unit of economic capacity.

Customers can draw very different amounts of power per cabinet, and AI workloads are increasing power and cooling requirements.

Equinix has said newer IBX facilities are being designed to support substantially higher power and cooling needs than earlier facilities.

That means flat cabinet counts or utilization rates can coexist with meaningful changes in delivered power capacity and revenue potential.

Utilization is not occupancy or profitability

Cabinet utilization does not directly measure:

  • megawatts consumed;
  • contractual price per cabinet;
  • interconnection revenue;
  • operating margin; or
  • return on development capital.

It should be read with recurring revenue, bookings, and network-service monetization.
