Why depletable tons matter

A landfill is not an unlimited asset.

Each ton placed into a landfill uses part of its permitted or expected disposal capacity.

WM reported 128.4 million depletable tons across active solid-waste and hazardous-waste landfills in 2025, compared with 124.9 million in 2024.

The company also reports tons per day and the number of sites receiving those tons.

Depletable tons connect volume with asset depletion

Higher landfill volume can support current revenue and network economics, but it also consumes airspace.

That creates a useful operating tension:

more tons today → more disposal revenue today → less remaining capacity, all else equal

Landfill expansions, permits, new cells, acquisitions, engineering changes, and revised closure assumptions can alter the available-capacity side of that equation.

Depletable tons are not the same as every ton handled

Transfer-station volume, collected waste, recycled material, and other handled tons do not necessarily consume landfill airspace.

The measure should therefore remain separate from Waste Collection and Disposal Volume.

It is specifically useful for landfill depletion and asset-life analysis.

Volume can affect landfill amortization

Landfill accounting often allocates certain capitalized costs over the estimated capacity consumed.

As more depletable tons are placed, the company recognizes more of the landfill asset's cost over time, subject to the applicable accounting estimates and asset categories.

That makes changes in landfill capacity estimates, expansion assumptions, and closure obligations important context for the metric.

A higher tonnage number is not automatically better

Strong landfill demand can be economically attractive when pricing and incremental margins are favorable.

But investors should also consider remaining airspace, permitting difficulty, closure and post-closure obligations, environmental risk, and replacement-capacity needs.
