Waste Internalization Rate: Captive Disposal Economics Explained

Waste internalization rate measures how much collected waste is directed into a company's own disposal network under its reporting definition, helping investors understand vertical integration and third-party disposal exposure.

Waste internalization rate measures the share of a waste company's disposal activity captured by its own disposal network under the issuer's reporting method.

That basis matters. It means the published percentage should not automatically be interpreted as the physical percentage of tons sent to company-owned landfills.

Why internalization matters

Collection businesses must ultimately dispose of the waste they collect.

If a company owns landfills and transfer infrastructure, it can direct more of that waste into its own network instead of paying third parties for disposal.

Higher internalization can therefore retain more of the economics inside the company.

WM reported internalization of waste, based on disposal costs, of 71.9% in the third quarter of 2025, up from 69.6% a year earlier.

Internalization is a vertical-integration measure

The operating chain can be simplified as:

customer collection → transfer → company landfill or third-party disposal

A collection route that feeds a company-owned landfill creates a different economic structure from a route that ends at a competitor's disposal site.

That is why internalization can influence disposal expense, network density, and acquisition value.

Higher internalization is not automatically better

A company should not route waste inefficiently merely to increase the percentage.

Distance, transfer costs, landfill pricing, available airspace, environmental obligations, and local permitting can make third-party disposal economically sensible.

A rising internalization rate can also come from acquisitions that add landfills rather than from operational improvement at existing assets.

The denominator must be preserved

WM's supplemental metric is based on disposal costs.

Other companies may discuss internal disposal, captive volume, or vertical integration using different definitions.

Investors should not compare those percentages unless the numerator and denominator are aligned.

Keeping more waste inside the network can improve current economics while using more owned landfill airspace.
