Professional staffing contract gross margin is the gross profit retained from contract staffing revenue after direct worker and assignment costs.

Kforce's total Flex gross profit margin was 26.9% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 25.8% a year earlier. Robert Half's contract talent gross margin was 39.1% in both the second quarter of 2026 and the prior-year quarter.

Cross-company percentages are not automatically comparable

Kforce and Robert Half serve different client, skill, geography, and assignment mixes. Their treatment of reimbursable expenses and the mix of conversion revenue can also affect the reported margin.

The right analytical task is to understand each issuer's margin drivers first, then compare only after preserving those scope differences.

Spread is only one part of the margin

Kforce says Flex gross profit reflects the pay-bill spread, payroll taxes, benefits costs, and billable expenses. Robert Half similarly identifies pay-bill spreads, fringe costs, and conversion revenue as key contract-talent gross-margin drivers.

A higher average bill rate therefore does not guarantee margin expansion if worker pay, benefits, or assignment mix rise faster.
