Utility system peak demand measures the highest electricity load reached by a utility system over a defined period, usually reported in megawatts.
It is a maximum-load measure, not a measure of total annual electricity sales.
The grid must be prepared for the peak

Peak demand can be heavily influenced by:

- distributed generation and storage.
Comparisons should preserve each issuer's definition, service territory, and whether the reported peak is coincident, noncoincident, firm, or otherwise qualified.
