Wafer shipments measure the volume of semiconductor wafers delivered by a foundry, helping investors separate production volume from pricing, mix, and utilization.

Wafer shipments measure the number of semiconductor wafers a foundry delivers during a period.

Foundries may report shipments in physical wafers or convert different wafer sizes into a common equivalent basis, such as 300mm-equivalent wafers.

Why wafer shipments matter

A foundry's revenue can be simplified as:

wafer revenue ≈ wafer shipments × average selling price per wafer

That makes shipment growth one of the clearest ways to separate volume from pricing.

GlobalFoundries, for example, reported that second-quarter 2026 revenue growth was partly driven by a 7.6% year-over-year increase in wafer shipment volume to 625 thousand 300mm-equivalent wafers. UMC also guides investors directly on expected wafer-shipment growth.

Physical wafers are not always comparable

A 300mm wafer has materially more surface area than a 200mm wafer, so simply comparing raw wafer counts can distort manufacturing scale.

Some companies therefore normalize shipments to a common wafer-size equivalent. Investors should check:

  • the reported wafer diameter;
  • whether the figure is normalized;
  • whether engineering or non-production wafers are included; and
  • whether the metric covers all fabs or only a segment.

Shipment growth is not automatically revenue growth

Revenue can diverge from shipments because Wafer Average Selling Price changes.

A foundry can ship more wafers while revenue grows more slowly if mix shifts toward lower-priced processes or wafer sizes. The opposite can happen when advanced or specialty processes raise ASP.

Shipments and utilization answer different questions

Wafer shipments describe delivered volume. Foundry Capacity Utilization compares shipment or production volume with available manufacturing capacity.

A shipment increase can therefore occur with flat utilization if capacity expanded at the same time.
