Tung Chee Chen inherited a role in his family's Orient Overseas shipping group, led the company for more than two decades and helped steer the dynasty to a multibillion-dollar sale to COSCO Shipping in 2018. [1][2][3]
He entered a shipping empire founded by his father
Tung Chee Chen was born into the shipping family created by C. Y. Tung, who founded Orient Overseas in 1947 and built an international Chinese merchant fleet. The business therefore existed at substantial scale before the younger Tung's leadership career began. [1][2]
His elder brother Tung Chee Hwa took leadership of the parent company after their father's death in 1982. When Chee Hwa left business for public office in 1996, Tung Chee Chen took the helm and became the group's chairman, chief executive and president. [2][3]
The company continued expanding its container-shipping network during his tenure. OOCL's history records the delivery in 2017 of the OOCL Hong Kong, then the world's largest containership, reflecting the scale the group had reached before its eventual sale. [2]
His leadership culminated in the sale of the family's controlling stake
COSCO Shipping acquired Orient Overseas International in 2018. Forbes says Tung Chee Chen and his brother sold their entire 68.7% family stake in the transaction and received about $4.3 billion for their shares. [1]
Tung inherited a major operating platform and ownership position, but he also spent more than two decades directing the company before the sale. His fortune remained rooted in the family shipping dynasty while his own leadership materially shaped the value and scale ultimately realized by the family. [1][2][3]
