What is the quick ratio?
The quick ratio, also called the acid-test ratio, compares a company's most liquid current assets with its current liabilities.
A common formula is:

3 / current liabilitiesAnother common shortcut starts with total current assets and subtracts inventory and prepaid expenses or other current assets that are not considered quick assets. Because financial-data providers can use slightly different definitions, investors should confirm what the numerator contains rather than assuming every reported quick ratio is constructed identically.
The idea is narrower than the current ratio. Inventory may be valuable, but it often needs to be sold before it becomes cash. Prepaid expenses can reduce future costs but generally cannot be used to pay a bondholder tomorrow. The quick ratio therefore asks how much near-term coverage exists without relying on those less-liquid current assets.
A quick-ratio example
Consider a hypothetical company with:

2Quick ratio = $170m / $200m = 0.85xThe current ratio is:
1$340m / $200m = 1.70xThe gap between 1.70x and 0.85x tells the investor something useful: half of the company's current-asset balance is inventory, prepaid items, or other assets excluded from this quick-asset definition.
That does not prove the company has a liquidity problem. Its inventory may sell every few days and its operating cash flow may be strong. The gap simply identifies where the liquidity assumption resides.
Why quick-ratio definitions vary
Unlike a single GAAP line item, the quick ratio is an analytical measure assembled from balance-sheet categories. CFA Institute treats it as a standard liquidity ratio, but analysts and vendors can differ over which assets deserve to be called quick.
A narrow formula may include only cash, cash equivalents, short-term marketable securities, and receivables. Another source may use:
1(Current assets - inventory - prepaid expenses) / current liabilitiesThose formulas can produce different results if "other current assets" contain tax receivables, contract assets, derivative assets, restricted cash, or other balances that one analyst considers liquid and another does not.
The solution is not to declare one shortcut universally correct. State the quick-asset convention, use it consistently through time and across peers, and investigate material components.
Quick ratio versus current ratio
The current ratio uses all current assets:
1Current ratio = Current assets / Current liabilitiesThe quick ratio uses a narrower numerator. It is designed to reduce reliance on inventory and other balances that may require more time or operating activity before they can satisfy obligations.
For an inventory-heavy business, the gap between the two ratios can be large. For an asset-light software company with little inventory, they may be close.
Neither ratio is automatically superior. The current ratio can better reflect the full operating current-asset base. The quick ratio can be a more conservative stress check. Investors learn more by asking why the ratios differ than by choosing one as the universal winner.
Receivables are not the same as cash
Excluding inventory does not make the quick-ratio numerator risk-free. Accounts receivable are usually included among quick assets, yet they still need to be collected.
A receivable from a financially strong customer due in 15 days is different from an invoice that is 120 days past due. Rising receivables can also make the quick ratio look better while operating cash flow weakens because recognized sales have not yet been collected.
Useful follow-up questions include:
- Are receivables growing faster than revenue?
- Is the allowance for credit losses increasing?
- Are days sales outstanding rising?
- Is customer concentration high?
- Are receivables sold or pledged under financing arrangements?
A quick ratio backed heavily by questionable receivables deserves more skepticism than the same ratio backed mainly by cash.
Marketable securities and restricted cash need context
Short-term marketable securities are commonly included as quick assets because they can often be converted to cash readily. Their economic usefulness still depends on what they are, their market liquidity, and whether the company can actually use the proceeds.
Restricted cash is an especially important example. A balance held for a specific legal, collateral, regulatory, or contractual purpose may not be available to pay ordinary corporate bills. A vendor formula that mechanically includes every cash-like line can overstate practical liquidity.
The same principle appears in net debt: subtracting cash from borrowings is only sensible when the cash-like assets included in the calculation are economically available and the debt scope is compatible.
A quick ratio below 1 is not an automatic distress signal
If the quick ratio is below 1, quick assets are less than current liabilities under the selected definitions. That is a useful observation, but it is not a complete solvency diagnosis.
Some businesses collect customer cash very quickly and can continuously meet obligations from incoming operating cash. Others maintain committed bank facilities. A retailer may hold highly saleable inventory excluded from the quick ratio. A subscription business may carry current deferred revenue that requires future service rather than a cash refund in the ordinary course.
Conversely, a quick ratio above 1 does not guarantee safety. A company can face a sudden loss of financing, a customer default, legal restrictions on cash, or a concentrated debt maturity.
There is no universal quick-ratio threshold that replaces analysis of the company's operating and financing model.
Quick ratio and working capital
Working capital is a dollar measure:
1Current assets - current liabilitiesThe quick ratio is a relative measure using only selected liquid assets. A company can have positive working capital while its quick ratio is below 1 because much of its current asset base sits in inventory.
That combination is common enough that it should not be treated as contradictory. The metrics are showing different aspects of the same balance sheet.
Working capital tells you the net current-asset cushion. The current ratio scales the full cushion relative to current liabilities. The quick ratio asks how much of the denominator could be covered without depending on inventory and other excluded current assets.
The cash conversion cycle adds timing
A quick ratio can still miss the speed of operating cash conversion. The cash conversion cycle uses inventory, receivables, and payables turnover to estimate how long cash is tied up in the operating cycle.
A company with a quick ratio of 0.8x and a very fast, stable cash cycle may have stronger day-to-day liquidity than the headline suggests. A company with a quick ratio of 1.3x but rapidly lengthening collection periods may be deteriorating.
This is one reason trend analysis is more informative than a single ratio. Liquidity is both a balance-sheet amount and a timing problem.
Seasonality and quarter-end timing matter
Like the current ratio, the quick ratio uses point-in-time balance-sheet values. Seasonal collections, inventory purchases, supplier payments, or short-term borrowing can change the ratio substantially across a year.
Suppose a distributor collects a large group of customer invoices on December 30. Receivables fall and cash rises, leaving total quick assets roughly unchanged. If it then uses the cash to repay a current credit facility, both quick assets and current liabilities fall. Depending on the starting ratio, the reported quick ratio can move even though the underlying business has not changed much.
Compare the same seasonal dates, examine several quarters, and reconcile major changes with the statement of cash flows.
Quick ratio, leverage, and debt service
Short-term liquidity and long-term leverage are related but different.
A company can have a strong quick ratio and still be heavily indebted. It can also carry modest total debt but face a near-term cash squeeze. Debt-to-EBITDA measures debt relative to an earnings proxy, while the interest coverage ratio compares earnings with interest expense. Neither replaces a direct liquidity review.
Investors should therefore separate three questions:
1Can near-term obligations be met? -> liquidity ratios
2How much debt is carried? -> leverage ratios
3Can operating earnings service interest? -> coverage ratiosThe answers can disagree, and that disagreement is often the part worth investigating.
When the quick ratio can mislead
Common failure modes include:
- including receivables that are slow or doubtful;
- treating restricted cash as freely available;
- assuming all marketable securities can be liquidated at reported value instantly;
- comparing vendors that use different quick-asset definitions;
- ignoring a large debt maturity shortly after the reporting date;
- overlooking seasonality;
- interpreting a low ratio as distress without understanding a fast negative-working-capital model;
- interpreting a high ratio as strength without asking whether cash and receivables are productive or collectible.
The ratio is a screen for deeper balance-sheet work, not a credit rating.
A practical investor review
When using the quick ratio:
- Identify exactly which assets the calculation treats as quick.
- Use current liabilities from the same date and business scope.
- Compare the current ratio and explain the gap.
- Inspect receivables quality, collection trends, and customer concentration.
- Check whether cash or securities are restricted, pledged, or otherwise unavailable.
- Review working capital and the cash conversion cycle.
- Read operating cash flow and near-term debt maturities.
- Compare like seasonal periods and compatible peer definitions.
- Avoid universal healthy or unhealthy cutoffs.
