Airline available seat miles per gallon of fuel compares passenger capacity output with fuel consumed.

A basic expression is:

ASMs per gallon = available seat miles ÷ fuel gallons consumed

It is a capacity-output fuel-efficiency measure, not a direct measure of passenger demand or profitability.

The numerator is capacity, not traffic

Available Seat Miles count seats offered multiplied by miles flown. That means the ratio can improve because of more fuel-efficient aircraft, denser seating, longer stage lengths, higher gauge, operating changes, or a combination of those factors.

It does not require higher passenger load factor. An empty seat still contributes to ASM capacity.

Why the metric is useful

Fuel is a major airline expense, so investors want to know whether the network is producing more capacity for each gallon burned.

Allegiant reported 86.4 ASMs per gallon for the first six months of 2026, compared with 85.2 in the prior-year period. The comparison helps separate physical fuel efficiency from the sharp change in average fuel cost per gallon during the same period.

It is not the same as fuel cost efficiency

Two airlines could report similar ASMs per gallon while paying very different fuel prices.
