Airline cargo ton miles measure freight traffic by multiplying cargo weight by distance transported.

American Airlines reported 638M cargo ton miles in Q2 2026, up 22.5% from 521M a year earlier.

Cargo volume, not cargo pricing

Cargo ton miles tell you how much freight work the airline performed, not what it earned per unit. Pair the metric with cargo yield to separate traffic growth from pricing.

Cargo economics also sit outside passenger utilization metrics such as load factor and RPMs. A passenger airline can therefore see very different trends in passenger and cargo demand during the same quarter.
