Future development costs are estimated future capital expenditures required to develop proved oil and gas reserves under the assumptions used in reserve-value disclosures.

They are a key bridge between reserve volume and the capital still needed to turn that inventory into production.

EOG example

EOG's 2025 standardized-measure disclosure included $19.199 billion of future development costs.

The company noted that this amount included future abandonment costs.

Why it matters

Total Proved Reserves can look large, but undeveloped reserves may require substantial future spending.

Future development costs help investors ask whether reserve depth is capital-light or capital-intensive.

What it is not

This is not the same as management's next-year capital budget.

The standardized-measure calculation applies prescribed reserve and pricing assumptions to the proved reserve base. Actual development timing, inflation, project choices, commodity prices, and portfolio changes can produce different spending.

Use it with proved undeveloped reserves and PUD conversion activity rather than as a stand-alone forecast.
