Adobe at $238.79: AI Disruption, Cash Flow, and Reverse-DCF Sensitivity

A technical study of Adobe's current cash economics and the long-run revenue-growth and free-cash-flow assumptions that reconcile with the October 5, 2026 market price.

ADBE valuation

A 20% mature economic FCF margin requires about 3.1% annual revenue growth to reconcile with $238.79

Adobe's October 5 closing price and September share count imply approximately $92.94B of equity value. After the latest reported cash, short-term investments, and debt, modeled enterprise value is about $93.66B. The study reconstructs trailing economic free cash flow after stock-based compensation at $8.52B, or 32.8% of revenue. Holding the reference price fixed, a nine-year reverse DCF with a 20% horizon margin solves to approximately 3.1% annual revenue growth under the base discount assumptions.

Economic free cash flow remains high after treating stock compensation as a cost

The study defines economic free cash flow as operating cash flow less purchases of property and equipment less stock-based compensation. The convention is intentionally stricter than ordinary CFO-minus-capex free cash flow: stock compensation is deducted as an economic cost to shareholders even though it is not a cash outflow in the period.

Revenue increases from $19.4B in FY2023 to $26B in the trailing twelve months through Q3 FY2026, while economic free cash flow increases from $5.2B to $8.5B.

On the retained trailing calculation, Adobe's $8.52B of economic FCF represents 32.8% of revenue. Dividing the reference equity value by that stricter cash-flow measure produces approximately 10.9x. The reverse DCF begins from a lower 30% margin rather than assuming the current reconstructed margin persists unchanged.

The share count has fallen while the remaining authorization is large

Adobe reported 452.0M shares outstanding in January 2024 and 389.2M as of September 18, 2026, a decline of 13.9%. At the end of Q3, $24.5B remained under the current repurchase authorization.

Current AI evidence shows adaptation, adoption, and higher delivery costs

Q3 FY2026 did not show a collapse in Adobe's recurring business. Revenue grew 13% year over year, subscription revenue grew 14%, Creative & Marketing Professionals subscription revenue grew 13%, and Business Professionals & Consumers subscription revenue grew 16%. Those figures do not reveal the mix of seats, pricing, product mix, AI consumption, foreign exchange, or acquisitions.

Adobe is also changing where its capabilities can be used. The reviewed product documentation shows third-party generative models integrated into Adobe products rather than a Firefly-only architecture, while Adobe says its ChatGPT integration exposes more than 70 tools across products including Photoshop, Firefly, Acrobat and Express. These facts support a multi-model workflow strategy; they do not establish that the strategy will preserve pricing or paid seats.

Competitor evidence provides a useful counterexample to a simple assumption that AI usage must reduce design-software spending. Figma reported 48% Q2 revenue growth, 136% net-dollar retention, and said more than 80%of customers above $10,000 ARR were consuming AI credits weekly. Figma's economics cannot be transferred directly to Adobe, but the observation shows AI consumption and software expansion can coexist.

The reverse DCF asks how much growth is required after margin compression

The reference bridge uses 389.2M shares, -$724M of net cashβ€”meaning $724M of net debtβ€”and the $26.601B midpoint of updated FY2026 revenue guidance. The explicit forecast runs nine years through 2035, with a 30% starting economic FCF margin.

This is an assumption-driven reverse DCF, not a forecast or price target. Revenue grows at one solved annual rate, FCF margin moves linearly from the starting assumption to the horizon assumption, and the terminal value applies the entered perpetual growth rate to horizon FCF. Net cash is added to enterprise value to reconcile to equity value; a negative net-cash input represents net debt.

The valuation surface can be read directly as growth versus mature margin

The matrix below runs the same canonical DCF in the forward direction. Each cell fixes one revenue CAGR and one 2035 economic FCF margin, converts modeled enterprise value back to equity using the retained net-cash bridge, and divides by the same 389.2M share denominator.

Implied share price by revenue growth and 2035 economic FCF margin

Higher values reflect higher modeled enterprise value under the stated assumptions. The matrix is an assumption map, not a set of price targets.
Units: USD per shareData: October 5, 2026

The matrix ranges from about $161 at 0% growth and a 15% mature margin to about $525 at 10% growth and a 30% mature margin. The cell closest to the $238.79 reference price is the 3% growth, 20% mature-margin case at about $237.

10%$303$377$451$525
Outlined cell: 3% revenue growth + 20% mature margin = $237, close to the $238.79 reference price.

One illustrative point often used to understand the surface is 5% revenue growth with a 25% mature economic FCF margin. Under the base discount assumptions, that combination maps to approximately $321 per share. Using the separate 10.5% discount / 2.5% terminal-growth stress assumptions, the same operating path maps to approximately $268. Neither value is assigned a probability in this study.

The disruption budget solves how much long-run margin each growth path can absorb

The complementary calculation fixes revenue growth and solves the 2035 economic FCF margin required to make modeled enterprise value equal the $93.66B reference enterprise value. A lower required margin means the selected growth path can absorb more margin compression before the current price stops reconciling.

Required 2035 economic FCF margin by long-run revenue growth

Methodology and boundaries

Economic free cash flow

Economic free cash flow equals operating cash flow less purchases of property and equipment less stock-based compensation. This is a conservative analytical convention, not a GAAP measure and not Adobe guidance.

Trailing twelve months

TTM values equal FY2025 plus the first nine months of FY2026 less the first nine months of FY2025.

Reverse DCF

The canonical Grizzly Bulls revenue + margin DCF engine holds the October 5 reference equity value fixed and solves the constant revenue CAGR required for each terminal FCF-margin assumption. Starting economic FCF margin is 30%; margins converge linearly over nine explicit forecast years.

Sensitivity matrix

The sensitivity matrix uses the same canonical DCF engine with fixed revenue-growth and 2035 FCF-margin assumptions, then converts enterprise value to equity value using net cash and divides by 389.2 million shares.

Disruption budget

For each fixed revenue-growth assumption, the disruption budget solves the 2035 FCF margin that makes modeled enterprise value equal the October 5 reference enterprise value.

Evidence boundaries

The analysis does not estimate Creative Cloud seat counts because Adobe does not disclose them. AI-first ARR and MAU are management-defined operating metrics. Future buybacks are not added to DCF value; the repurchase authorization is shown only as capital-allocation context.
