Daniel Och built his fortune by founding Och-Ziff Capital Management in 1994 after a Goldman Sachs trading career, scaling the firm into a major alternative-asset manager and later investing through his family office. [1][2]
A Goldman Sachs trading career led to Och-Ziff
Och graduated from the Wharton School and began at Goldman Sachs in 1982, eventually leading proprietary trading and serving as co-head of U.S. equities trading. That experience preceded his decision to leave the bank and start an independent investment-management firm. [2]
Och founded Och-Ziff Capital Management in 1994 with $100 million of initial capital from the Ziff family. His biography says he later led the firm's 2007 public offering and expanded assets under management to tens of billions of dollars. [2][1]
Forbes says Och stepped down as chairman in 2019 and no longer has a role with the firm, which was renamed Sculptor Capital Management. He subsequently focused on Willoughby Capital, his family office for growth-equity and other investments. [1]
Founder economics, not client assets, created the fortune
Och-Ziff's assets under management represented client capital and therefore were never equivalent to Och's personal net worth. His wealth came from founder ownership, compensation, investment performance and the value realized through the public company and later personal investments. [1][2]
That distinction also explains why Och can remain a billionaire after leaving the firm he founded. The capital accumulated during his years at Och-Ziff became a personal investment base that he now deploys through Willoughby Capital and philanthropic vehicles. [1][2]
