Holden Spaht built his fortune through a professional investing career and a long tenure as a managing partner at Thoma Bravo, where he helped scale the firm's software private equity franchise. [1][2][3]

A finance career preceded Thoma Bravo

Spaht grew up in Baton Rouge as the son of educators, according to Thoma Bravo. He studied economics at Dartmouth, was a Fulbright Scholar, earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and began his career at Morgan Stanley before moving through Thomas H. Lee Partners and Morgan Stanley Capital Partners. [1]

He joined the firm that became Thoma Bravo in 2005, before its 2008 reorganization under the current name. Forbes identifies his wealth as self-made and ties it to private equity rather than to an inherited family company or transferred ownership stake. [2][3]

Spaht did not found the investment platform, so his starting point differs from that of Orlando Bravo or Carl Thoma. His path was instead that of a professional investor who joined early, earned senior ownership and helped compound the value of an already established organization. [1][2]

Software investing created the billionaire-scale value

At Thoma Bravo, Spaht became responsible for the firm's application software strategy and led landmark investments including Ellie Mae, Adenza and Coupa. The firm credits him with more than two dozen board seats and over 15 exits during his tenure. [1]

Forbes placed Spaht among the new billionaires created by the firm and reported that he joined the billionaire ranks alongside fellow managing partners Scott Crabill and Seth Boro. His fortune is therefore overwhelmingly career-created, with the main qualification being that he scaled within an existing private equity platform rather than founding one from scratch. [3][2]
