Hu Kaijun rose from manager of the state-backed company that became China Grand Enterprises to controlling a diversified private group with major pharmaceutical and investment holdings. [1][2][3]
He entered China Grand as a manager rather than as its owner
China Grand Enterprises was established in 1993 with a state-owned capital base. China Economic Times reported that Hu joined the organization that year in a business-management role and was appointed general manager in 1994. [3]
The company expanded rapidly during the 1990s, setting up regional businesses and moving into investments beyond its original trading activities. China Grand now describes itself as a multinational group centered on pharmaceuticals, crop science, trading, commercial management and hotels. [2]
During a series of ownership changes from the late 1990s through the 2000s, state shareholders exited and entities controlled by Hu accumulated ownership of China Grand. That process eventually made him the group's controlling owner rather than only its professional manager. [3]
Control of the group became the base for a large pharmaceutical fortune
Forbes says Hu is chairman and chief executive of China Grand Enterprises, whose holdings span healthcare, agriculture, real estate and financial services. The group is also the parent or controlling shareholder of several publicly traded companies. [1][2]
Hu's wealth is now tied primarily to China Grand's stakes in Huadong Medicine and Grand Pharmaceutical. His path differs from both a conventional inheritance and a startup founder story: he gained control of an established, capitalized enterprise and then spent decades expanding and restructuring it.
