Metals service center LIFO gross margin measures reported gross profit as a percentage of sales after the period's LIFO inventory valuation adjustment.

Reliance reported a 28.1% LIFO gross margin in the second quarter of 2026. Ryerson reported 17.7% gross margin under its reported inventory-accounting presentation.

LIFO can make current metal-price moves visible in reported margin

When replacement costs rise, LIFO accounting can create expense that reduces reported gross profit. When costs fall, LIFO income can lift it.

Reliance recorded $112.5M of LIFO expense in the second quarter of 2026, while Ryerson recorded $17.0M. The LIFO inventory valuation adjustment therefore matters when interpreting reported margin changes.

Reported and ex-LIFO margins answer different questions

LIFO gross margin is the accounting result reported in earnings. FIFO gross margin removes the LIFO effect to show the margin view management often uses for operating comparison.

Neither measure is inherently superior. The important point is to keep the accounting basis explicit.

Where this concept fits
  • Inventory accounting and gross-margin presentationCurrent relationship
LIFO gross margin includes the period's inventory valuation adjustment, FIFO or ex-LIFO gross margin removes that effect, and the LIFO adjustment explains the accounting bridge between the two presentations.
  • Physical volume, price, and comparable demand
Tons sold measures physical throughput, average selling price per ton captures commodity and mix effects, and same-store tons sold growth separates comparable-network demand from acquired volume.
  • Operating leverage and service depth
SG&A expense per ton shows distribution-cost intensity, while value-added processing, repeat-order mix, and product breadth describe the service model that can support customer stickiness and margin resilience.
