Metals service center same-store tons sold growth measures year-over-year tonnage growth from the comparable operating base after excluding recently acquired operations.
Ryerson's same-store tons sold increased 8.6% in the second quarter of 2026, compared with 60.5% growth in reported tons after including Olympic Steel. Reliance reported 5.3% same-store tons-sold growth for full-year 2025.
Same-store volume isolates the legacy network
Large acquisitions can make headline tons sold growth look much stronger than demand in the pre-existing business.
A same-store comparison narrows the question to locations and operations included in both periods. The seasoning and inclusion rules remain issuer-specific, so the measure is not a standardized industry series.
Volume growth can still reflect unusual project demand
Even comparable operations can benefit from large contracts, restocking, or end-market shifts. A strong percentage does not by itself prove broad-based demand or market-share gains.
Read same-store volume together with average selling price per ton and the issuer's end-market commentary before attributing the change to one driver.
