Specialty insurance underwriting income measures profit produced by underwriting activities before investment income and broader corporate items.

Arch Capital's insurance segment reported $27M of underwriting income in Q2 2026, down 79.1% from $129M in Q2 2025.

Underwriting profit is narrower than company earnings

An insurer can earn investment income on its asset portfolio even when underwriting weakens, so underwriting income should not be treated as consolidated net income. It is designed to isolate insurance operating economics.

Read it with net premiums earned and the combined ratio. The ratio explains how much earned premium was consumed by losses and expenses, while underwriting income expresses the remaining result in dollars.
