Foodservice proprietary brand case mix measures the share of cases represented by a distributor's own branded or proprietary products under its reported definition.
US Foods said organic broadline private-brand cases were approximately 35% of total cases for the 13 weeks ended June 27, 2026. Sysco reported 35.4% Sysco brand penetration in U.S. Broadline for fiscal 2026.
Own-brand penetration can support gross profit
Sysco says its branded products generate higher gross margin because of procurement efficiencies. PFG similarly says independent customers' use of Performance Brands contributes to higher gross profit per case.
That links proprietary-brand penetration to gross margin, but the relationship also depends on category mix, sourcing, pricing, and customer mix.
The denominators are not standardized
US Foods describes private-brand cases within organic broadline activity. Sysco defines brand penetration as Sysco-branded case volume divided by total U.S. Broadline cases.
Those percentages should not be treated as the same normalized KPI even when the reported levels look similar. Independent sales mix captures a separate customer-composition dimension.
