Rental car rental days measure the number of revenue-generating vehicle-rental days during a reporting period.

Avis Budget calls the metric rental days. Hertz calls the comparable volume measure Transaction Days, with each 24-hour rental period counted and a partial period treated as one day.

Rental days are the volume side of rental revenue

Avis reported 43.907M total rental days in Q2 2026, down from 44.945M a year earlier.

Hertz reported 30.895M Americas RAC transaction days and 7.751M International RAC transaction days in Q2 2026.

Rental days should be read with revenue per day. More days can lift revenue even if daily pricing is flat, while stronger pricing can offset weaker volume.

Volume also drives fleet utilization

Rental days become more informative when compared with available rental days and vehicle utilization.

The same rental-day count can represent very different economics depending on how large the rentable fleet was. Investors should also preserve each issuer's counting convention rather than silently treating Avis rental days and Hertz Transaction Days as a standardized industry series.

Part of the Rental Car Operating Economics

Where this concept fits
  • Rental volume, fleet capacity, and utilizationCurrent relationship
Rental or transaction days measure consumed rental volume, average rental fleet measures the vehicle base, available rental days convert that fleet into time-expanded capacity, and utilization connects consumed days with available capacity. Avis and Hertz denominator conventions remain issuer-specific.
  • Daily pricing and fleet revenue productivity
Revenue per day measures monetization on rented days, while revenue per unit per month spreads revenue across the rentable fleet. The second measure therefore combines rate, volume, and utilization rather than acting as another daily-price metric.
  • Fleet carrying, operating, residual-value, and financing cost
Per-unit fleet cost captures depreciation and related vehicle-value economics under issuer-specific definitions, adjusted direct operating expense per day captures day-to-day rental operations, program-vehicle mix changes residual-value exposure, and vehicle interest adds the financing layer. These measures are complementary rather than a standardized industry cost stack.
