Rental car vehicle interest cost is the interest expense associated with financing the rental-vehicle fleet.

Avis reported $232M of vehicle interest, net, in Q2 2026 versus $229M a year earlier. Vehicle interest equaled 7.7% of quarterly revenue.

Fleet financing is a separate cost layer

Rental fleets require large recurring vehicle purchases. Operators commonly fund those vehicles with vehicle-backed debt and recycle cash from vehicle dispositions into new fleet purchases.

That makes vehicle interest economically different from fleet cost per unit per month, which focuses on depreciation, lease, and related fleet-value economics.

It is also separate from corporate debt interest.

Lower fleet size does not guarantee lower interest cost

Interest cost depends on vehicle debt balances, rates, hedging, funding structure, and fleet levels.

Avis's first-half 2026 vehicle interest rose to $461M from $439M even as average rental fleet declined, with the company citing higher interest rates as a pressure in its segment discussion.

Investors should connect financing cost to average rental fleet and vehicle utilization rather than treating it as a fixed percentage of rental revenue.

Where this concept fits
  • Fleet carrying, operating, residual-value, and financing costCurrent relationship
Per-unit fleet cost captures depreciation and related vehicle-value economics under issuer-specific definitions, adjusted direct operating expense per day captures day-to-day rental operations, program-vehicle mix changes residual-value exposure, and vehicle interest adds the financing layer. These measures are complementary rather than a standardized industry cost stack.
  • Rental volume, fleet capacity, and utilization
Rental or transaction days measure consumed rental volume, average rental fleet measures the vehicle base, available rental days convert that fleet into time-expanded capacity, and utilization connects consumed days with available capacity. Avis and Hertz denominator conventions remain issuer-specific.
  • Daily pricing and fleet revenue productivity
Revenue per day measures monetization on rented days, while revenue per unit per month spreads revenue across the rentable fleet. The second measure therefore combines rate, volume, and utilization rather than acting as another daily-price metric.
