Rental car revenue per unit per month (RPU) measures how much revenue an average rentable vehicle generates per month.

Hertz calculates Total RPU by dividing foreign-currency-adjusted revenue by Average Rentable Vehicles and then by the number of months in the period.

Americas RAC RPU was $1,557 in Q2 2026 versus $1,421 a year earlier.

RPU combines rate and utilization

Revenue per day measures monetization only on days a vehicle is rented. RPU spreads revenue across the rentable fleet whether a vehicle was rented every day or sat idle.

That makes RPU an asset-productivity measure influenced by pricing, rental volume, and vehicle utilization.

The fleet denominator is part of the metric

Hertz uses Average Rentable Vehicles, not all average vehicles. Vehicles held for sale or moving through disposition channels are excluded from that rentable denominator.

RPU should therefore not be compared with another operator's revenue divided by a broader fleet count unless the denominator has been reconciled. It is also not a margin measure because fleet depreciation, operating expense, and vehicle interest remain outside the numerator.

Where this concept fits
  • Daily pricing and fleet revenue productivityCurrent relationship
Revenue per day measures monetization on rented days, while revenue per unit per month spreads revenue across the rentable fleet. The second measure therefore combines rate, volume, and utilization rather than acting as another daily-price metric.
  • Rental volume, fleet capacity, and utilization
Rental or transaction days measure consumed rental volume, average rental fleet measures the vehicle base, available rental days convert that fleet into time-expanded capacity, and utilization connects consumed days with available capacity. Avis and Hertz denominator conventions remain issuer-specific.
  • Fleet carrying, operating, residual-value, and financing cost
Per-unit fleet cost captures depreciation and related vehicle-value economics under issuer-specific definitions, adjusted direct operating expense per day captures day-to-day rental operations, program-vehicle mix changes residual-value exposure, and vehicle interest adds the financing layer. These measures are complementary rather than a standardized industry cost stack.
