Satellite radio installations measure the hardware placements and shipments used in SiriusXM's subscriber-acquisition economics.

For the company's SAC-per-installation calculation, the denominator includes satellite-radio installations in new vehicles plus shipments of aftermarket radios during the period.

Installations are a distribution measure, not subscriber growth

SiriusXM reported 13.452 million installations in 2025, compared with 13.545 million in 2024.

That scale should not be confused with net subscriber additions. SiriusXM recorded negative 299,000 net additions in 2025 even while millions of radios were installed or shipped.

The gap exists because an installation is an opportunity to acquire or serve a listener, not proof that the end user became or remained a paying subscriber.

The metric sits near the top of the vehicle funnel

Installations help investors understand the reach of SiriusXM's automaker and aftermarket distribution before conversion and retention determine the eventual subscriber base.

A useful sequence is:

radio placement or shipment → trial or promotional exposure → self-pay conversion → retention

The company does not report every stage of that funnel as one reconciled metric, so investors should avoid treating installations as a direct proxy for conversion.

Installations are the denominator for SAC per installation

The most direct analytical use of the metric is SAC per installation. In 2025, SiriusXM divided an adjusted $245 million acquisition-cost numerator by 13.452 million installations to produce $18.21 per installation.

That makes installation volume a unit-cost denominator, not a customer-count measure.

Connects self-pay and promotional subscriber scale, churn and ARPU with automaker-driven installation and acquisition economics, then links those customer economics to subscriber and advertising revenue plus the direct content, royalty, service, and transmission cost stack.
