Security monitoring deferred subscriber acquisition revenue measures the liability created when ADT collects certain non-refundable upfront fees but has not yet recognized all of the related revenue.
ADT reported $2.084 billion of deferred subscriber acquisition revenue at December 31, 2025, compared with $2.068 billion a year earlier.
The liability arises from a material right
In company-owned transactions, ADT treats certain one-time non-refundable initiation fees as creating a material right because the customer would not have to pay the same fee again upon renewal.
The related revenue is therefore deferred rather than recognized immediately.
Cash collection and revenue recognition happen at different times
A customer can pay the fee upfront while ADT recognizes the revenue over the estimated customer relationship.
That is why the balance is a contract liability, not an acquisition-cost asset and not evidence that the cash has not been collected.
The revenue is recognized using the same accelerated customer-life pattern
ADT amortizes deferred subscriber acquisition revenue on a pooled basis using an accelerated method consistent with subscriber system assets and deferred acquisition costs.
The balance should therefore be analyzed with deferred acquisition revenue amortization, not as a standalone future-revenue forecast.
