Specialty insurance gross premiums written measures premium booked on policies before subtracting premium ceded to reinsurers.

Arch Capital's insurance segment reported $2.603B of gross premiums written in Q2 2026, down 2.9% from $2.681B a year earlier.

Gross written premium is not retained premium or revenue

Gross premiums written show the top of the underwriting funnel, but an insurer can transfer part of that exposure through reinsurance. Net premiums written therefore answer a different question about retained business.

Written premium also precedes recognition as net premiums earned. Growth in gross writings can lead reported earned premium rather than appearing in revenue immediately.
