Specialty insurance net premiums written measure premium booked after deducting the portion ceded to reinsurers, making the metric closer to the business the insurer keeps on its own risk account.

Arch Capital's insurance segment reported $1.933B in Q2 2026, down 5.1% from $2.036B a year earlier. Excluding non-renewed programs related to the MCE Acquisition, Arch said the decline would have been 1.8%.

Retention and portfolio actions matter

The gap between gross premiums written and net writings can change with reinsurance strategy, while non-renewals can make premium growth look weaker even when they reflect deliberate portfolio pruning.

Net writings also feed net premiums earned over future periods rather than becoming earned premium immediately.
