A contract research backlog conversion rate measures how quickly previously booked clinical-research work turns into recognized revenue over a stated period.
Medpace reported a 24.1% backlog conversion rate in the second quarter of 2026, after 23.3% in the first quarter and 23.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025. The company presents the rate alongside quarterly revenue and backlog, but investors should retain Medpace's reported methodology rather than assuming every CRO calculates conversion on the same opening or average balance.
Backlog growth and conversion answer different questions
A company can win substantial new work while revenue conversion slows because study starts move out, enrollment takes longer, or the project mix shifts toward longer-duration programs. The reverse can also happen: current revenue can accelerate even if net new business awards are temporarily soft.
This makes conversion a useful bridge between the stock of contract research backlog and the revenue actually recognized in the quarter.
Faster conversion is not automatically better
A higher rate can reflect healthy execution, but it can also result from a shorter-duration project mix, unusually high pass-through activity, or a backlog denominator that changed because of cancellations. A lower rate can reflect delays rather than lost work.
The rate therefore belongs beside business cancellations and backlog composition. It should not be treated as a standalone quality score.
