Mileage measures footprint while equivalent volume measures activity
The network handled Equivalent Pipeline Transportation Volume of 13.712 million barrels per day equivalent.
Those two numbers answer different questions. Mileage describes how geographically extensive the system is, while equivalent transportation volume describes how much reported activity moved through it.
A mile of pipeline has no standard capacity
Diameter, pressure, commodity, pump or compression configuration, route, ownership interest, utilization, and interconnections can make two pipeline miles economically very different.
Dividing throughput by miles would therefore create a visually tidy but analytically weak "volume per mile" metric.
Integration can matter more than raw length
A network becomes more useful when pipelines connect processing plants, fractionators, storage, petrochemical facilities, demand centers, and Marine Terminal Volume.
The more than 50,000-mile figure is best treated as physical reach, not as a direct measure of capacity, revenue, or profitability.
