Payments payment volume measures the dollar value of payment activity handled, enabled, or branded by a payments network or platform under the issuer's definition.
It is a dollar-scale activity measure, not revenue.
Payment volume shows economic activity flowing through the system
Visa reported fiscal third-quarter 2026 payments volume growth of 10% on a constant-dollar basis for the three months ended June 30, 2026.
Mastercard reported second-quarter 2026 gross dollar volume of $2.9 trillion, up 8% on a local-currency basis.
PayPal reported second-quarter 2026 total payment volume of $486.4 billion, up 10% year over year.
These figures are related, but they are not interchangeable.
Definitions differ materially
Visa's payments volume reflects purchase activity on Visa credentials under its reporting scope.
Mastercard's gross dollar volume includes purchase volume plus cash volume on Mastercard-branded cards.
PayPal's total payment volume measures payments completed on its platform or enabled through partner payment solutions, net of reversals and excluding gateway-only transactions.
Volume growth does not equal revenue growth
Pricing, service mix, cross-border activity, incentives, foreign exchange, and value-added services can all cause revenue growth to differ from payment-volume growth.

Payments payment volume is most useful as a network-or-platform dollar-scale measure. Pair it with transaction count, cross-border mix, pricing, incentives, and transaction economics.
