Payments processed transactions measure the number of payment events processed, switched, or completed by a payments company under its stated definition.
It is an activity-count measure, not payment volume.
Transaction count separates frequency from ticket size
Visa processed 71.7 billion transactions in its fiscal third quarter of 2026, up 10% year over year.
Mastercard reported switched-transaction growth of 9% in the second quarter of 2026.
PayPal processed 6.75 billion payment transactions in the second quarter of 2026, up 8%.
A company can grow transaction count faster than payment volume if average transaction size falls, or the reverse.
The verbs matter
Visa reports transactions processed by Visa.
Mastercard defines switched transactions as transactions initiated and switched through its network.
PayPal counts completed payments on its platform or enabled through partner payment solutions, net of reversals and excluding gateway-only transactions.
Those scopes should not be collapsed into one standardized count.
Processing growth can drive different revenue streams
Transaction processing assessments, network fees, merchant economics, and wallet monetization do not all scale identically with transaction count.

Payments processed transactions are most useful as a network-or-platform activity-count measure. Read them with payment volume, average ticket, cross-border mix, and revenue composition.
