Video game deferred net revenue is the revenue-recognition timing balance that can separate current-period sales activity from GAAP net revenue for online-enabled games.

Electronic Arts calculates net bookings by adding the period change in deferred net revenue for online-enabled games to GAAP net revenue.

A negative bridge can put revenue above bookings

EA reported $1.986B of Q1 fiscal 2027 net revenue, a -$637M change in deferred net revenue, and $1.349B of net bookings.

In that quarter, the negative change means recognized revenue exceeded the current-period bookings measure by the amount of the deferred-revenue bridge. That can happen when previously deferred economics are recognized faster than new amounts are deferred.

The bridge is timing, not a demand score

A change in deferred net revenue does not tell investors whether player demand is healthy on its own.

Release timing, online service obligations, accounting estimates, and the mix between live services and full-game activity can all affect the relationship between bookings and revenue.

The useful question is how the bridge changes the timing of reported revenue, not whether a positive or negative change is automatically favorable.
