Auto finance average recovery rate measures the average share of outstanding principal recovered when repossessed vehicles are liquidated.

A higher recovery rate reduces the loss severity on defaulted auto loans, while a lower recovery rate increases it.

How to read it

Recovery depends heavily on collateral values. For an auto lender, used-vehicle wholesale prices can therefore affect credit losses even when borrower default frequency is unchanged.

CarMax Auto Finance reported a 45.5% average recovery rate for fiscal 2026. CarMax defines the measure as the average percentage of outstanding principal received when a vehicle is repossessed and liquidated, generally through its wholesale auctions.

Do not confuse recovery with delinquency

Recovery rate is a loss-severity measure after repossession and liquidation. Past-due account rate is a payment-performance measure before that outcome, while net credit loss rate reflects realized losses relative to average loans.

Those measures can move differently.

Investor use

Recovery rate is most useful alongside wholesale vehicle values, underwriting mix, delinquency, charge-offs, and allowance assumptions. A lender can have stable defaults but worsening net losses if collateral recoveries deteriorate.

CarMax also notes that wholesale market conditions are a primary driver of its recovery rate, which makes this metric an important bridge between the retail vehicle market and auto-credit performance.
