Net auto loans originated measures the dollar amount of new auto financing produced during a period after the issuer's stated adjustments.

It is a flow measure, not the ending loan portfolio.

CarMax example

CarMax Auto Finance reported $7.9927 billion of net auto loans originated in fiscal 2026 after the impact of its three-day payoff policy.

CarMax also reported 331,380 vehicle units financed during the year.

Origination volume has three major drivers

For a vertically integrated used-auto retailer, originations can be framed as a combination of:

  1. retail vehicle unit sales;
  2. finance penetration; and
  3. average amount financed per financed vehicle.

That means weaker originations can come from fewer retail units, lower penetration, smaller financed balances, or some combination.

Flow versus portfolio

New originations affect future finance income over time as loans season and interest is recognized.

Do not treat one year's originations as equivalent to average or ending loans outstanding. Portfolio balances also reflect repayments, charge-offs, loan sales, and prior-vintage originations.

Primary source: CarMax fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.

CarMax said its fiscal 2026 decline in net originations reflected lower average amount financed, used-unit sales, and net penetration.
