Used auto online retail sales rate measures the share of retail vehicle sales completed through the issuer's full defined online transaction flow.

It is narrower than a general digitally enabled transaction measure.

CarMax example

CarMax reported that 13% of retail used vehicle sales were online retail sales in fiscal 2026.

CarMax defines an online retail sale as one where the customer completes all four of these activities online: reserving the vehicle, financing if needed, trading in or opting out of a trade-in, and creating an online sales order.

Why it matters

The measure shows adoption of end-to-end digital purchasing rather than simple online research or lead generation.

It complements Used Auto Omni Sales Rate, which covers transactions that mix online and offline steps.

What it does not prove

A higher online sales rate does not automatically imply better margins, lower SG&A, or higher conversion.

Those outcomes depend on fulfillment costs, customer acquisition, store utilization, logistics, and the economics of the transaction itself.
