CarMax example

CarMax reported $974 of wholesale gross profit per unit in fiscal 2026, down 4.9% from fiscal 2025.

Why wholesale economics are distinct

CarMax uses wholesale auctions for vehicles that do not meet its retail standards and charges dealer buyers fees based on sale price.

That creates a different margin model from retail used vehicles.

Used-Vehicle Gross Profit per Unit measures retail front-end economics, while wholesale GP per unit measures the disposition economics of the auction channel.

Volume and margin can offset

A retailer can sell more wholesale vehicles at a lower margin per unit, or fewer at a higher margin.

The useful bridge is:

wholesale units × wholesale gross profit per unit

This approximates the gross-profit contribution of the wholesale channel before broader overhead.
