CarMax example

CarMax reported $1,860 of SG&A per total unit in fiscal 2026, up 1.8% from fiscal 2025.

Why it matters

The measure helps investors separate overhead growth from changes in transaction volume.

If fixed or semi-fixed costs are spread across fewer vehicles, SG&A per unit can rise even if total SG&A is nearly flat.

Denominator discipline

The denominator matters. A retailer using retail-only units will produce a different result from one using retail plus wholesale units.

CarMax's measure should therefore be interpreted under its own total-unit convention.

Pair it with margin

SG&A per unit is a cost-efficiency measure, not a profit measure.

Read it with retail and wholesale gross profit per unit and with SG&A as a Percent of Gross Profit to understand whether unit economics cover the overhead burden.
